Let’s Talk Hard Water Stains

Accumulation and Etching Get Rid of Hard Water StainsHave you tried Brite and Clean Hard Water Stain Remover? I’m going to show you why it works and how it works, and then I’m going to let you decide if it’s right for you. And I will link to everything we’re going to talk about today for easy access.

Did you know there are two types of hard water stains?

  1. Accumulation
  2. Etching

Now accumulation is where calcium carbonate builds up on the outside of your shower glass. When it evaporates, it leaves these little white marks behind.

Etching is a Chemical Reaction

Etching Get Rid of Hard Water Stains Get Rid of Hard Water StainsThe etching is the other type of hard water stain, and that’s a chemical reaction that happens just below the surface of the glass.

And so, what we’re going to do today is polish and buff the glass. So, it takes it down just a sliver into that layer. This is not sanding, this is buffing. It’s a similar but different process.

Note: hard water stains are expensive to remove and they don’t come off easily. So, if you are a house cleaner and you offering this as a service, this is not part of your regular maintenance service.

This is an upsell.

Okay? And if you a homeowner, this is something you want to do on a Saturday when you have a lot of time. It’s not going to happen like, “Poof,” you’re just scrubbing the shower. It’s going to take a lot more elbow grease and a lot more oomph.

Remove Hard Water Stains to Prevent Replacing Shower Glass

Hard Water Stain Remover Kit Get Rid of Hard Water StainsReplacing shower glass and windows are expensive. And if you know how to remove the water deposits you can repeat the process when necessary.

As a professional house cleaner, you can use this as an upsell to all your customers. And if you are a homeowner, chances are as long as you’re going to live in the house, you’re going to have hard water issues. So, the kit I’m about to show you is a great investment.

Don’t Wear Out Your Arms with Scrubbing

Don't wear out your arms from scrubbing Get Rid of Hard Water StainsNow you are familiar with cleaning a shower which means getting a scrub brush or a scrubby. You get inside your shower, sprinkle some cleanser, and then go in circular motions using a lot of elbow grease.

This is going to be a similar process so it’s going to be familiar to you. And unlike the regular cleaning you do when the shower is wet and hot, and steamy and all this stuff … we want a minimal amount of water. So, think damp, not wet.

All right. The second thing is instead of using a lot of elbow grease, we’re going to use an orbital buffer. Now, this is a one-time investment if you buy it. Once you own one, you own it for life.

The Orbital Polisher from AutoSpa

Brite and Clean Orbital Polisher from AutoSpa Get Rid of Hard Water StainsThis orbital polisher is from Auto Spa, and this is usually sold in the automotive department. It is a six-inch orbital plate. They also come in a nine-inch head, and that’s almost like having a dinner plate on the end. It’s a little too big for me. So, I like the six inches because it’s smaller and it’s easier to maneuver and manage inside a shower.

Now having said that, I have to hold it like this and it requires my whole hand to hold that. Right?

So, as I’m cleaning, there can be some fatigue because that is the handle. And so instead of this particular model, the one that we’re going to be using today is a little bit more expensive. This one retails for $30.

Black & Decker Orbital Polisher with Comfy Handle

Brite and Clean Black & Decker Orbital Polisher with Comfy Handle Get Rid of Hard Water StainsAnd this orbital polisher is by Black and Decker. The reason I like this is because of the handle set up. So, as I’m cleaning, I can hold it down here and right here and move it as I go, or I can put my hand up here for more leverage. Or I can turn and change hands.

I like the hand positioning of this. This is the only reason I like this one better. It also does have a longer cord, so that’s good.

Now again, we want to check to make sure that the two prongs match the two prongs in my extension cord instead of mismatching the extension cord. Because you don’t want to get to a customer’s house and have a plug that does not fit your extension cord. So, before you leave the store, make sure you check and that your unit matches your extension cord.

Having said that, the head is also six inches. And what you see here is a microfiber bonnet.

Microfiber Bonnets for Orbital Polisher by AutoSpa

Brite and Clean Microfiber Bonnets for Orbital Polisher by AutoSpa Get Rid of Hard Water StainThis microfiber bonnet does not come with this unit. It’s made by AutoSpa and sold separately. They retail for five or six dollars for a pack of 2.

They are reusable. You just toss them in the wash at the end of a job and use them again. You can use the bonnets wet or dry and they just slide over the top of the head of the orbital polisher.

NOTE: Make sure you buy the right size. The 9-inch bonnets don’t fit the 6-inch machine.

Simple Cleaning Solution Ultimate Hard Water Stain Remover

Brite and Clean Hard Water Stain Remover - Simple Cleaning Solution Ultimate Hard Water Stain Remover Get Rid of Hard Water StainsThe Simple Cleaning Solution a.k.a. Ultimate Hard Water Stain Remover by Brite and Clean, Inc. is the product we will use with the polishers.

It is powder cleanser made of special chemicals that are going to erase all that calcium carbonate that is on the shower glass.

Now, this is also good for granite. It’s also good for toilets. It’s good for porcelain, and it says it’s good for some chrome and stainless steel.

Test first on an inconspicuous area before you just go at the front of a stainless-steel appliance full-bore.

Two Ways to Buy Ultimate Hard Water Stain Remover

Brite and Clean Ultimate Hard Water Stain Remover Shower Cleaning Kits Get Rid of Hard Water StainsSo, this is the powdered cleanser. This retails for about $13.

They also sell individual Shower Cleaning kits. The individual kit is $16. It comes with a couple of things that just the powdered cleanser does not have. It comes with a couple of microfiber cloths and two packets of the cleanser for two showers.

It also comes with a little instruction book with all kinds of instructions and tips for ways you can upsell your service. So, this is awesome.

Brite Wipes Are Part of the Shower Cleaning Kit

Brite and Clean Ultimate Hard Water Stain Remover Shower Cleaning Kit Two Microfiber Cloths Get Rid of Hard Water StainsThe shower cleaning kit also comes with two microfiber cloths. One is a tight weave microfiber cloth – the kind that professional window cleaners use to get the streaks from the windows.

The second is the world’s skinniest microfiber cloth. You use it for pretreatment before you actually do the cleaning itself. And in the corners of shower glass doors where your orbital buffer won’t reach.

These are also reusable and can go in the laundry when the job is complete. They last for about 500 uses.

NOTE: I will say something about this polyester polyamide microfiber cloth. This Brite Wipes cloth is the best cleaning cloth I’ve ever used. So, if nothing else, get a great supply of the Brite Wipes cloths because you will be using these for mirrors, and glass, and showers from here to infinity. These cloths and your hard water stain remover are about to change the way you do your business.

NOTE: A container of cleanser will clean on average about six showers. So, make sure you build the cost of the Hard Water Stain Remover supplies into the jobs you bid so you don’t lose money on the jobs.

A Spray Bottle of Water Will Keep the Walls Damp

Brite and Clean Ultimate Hard Water Stain Remover Spray Bottle Get Rid of Hard Water StainsWe want to think damp, not wet when removing hard water stains. So, take an empty bottle with you to fill at the customer’s house. This you will use to dampen the walls and your microfiber head as you apply new Brite and Clean cleanser.

You’ll wet the microfiber bonnet in the sink at the same time and wring it out before capping the head of the orbital buffer.

Once the bonnet is in place on the orbital polisher, you just sprinkle a few shakes of Ultimate Hard Water Stain Remover on your microfiber pad.

You can use your fingers to mash it into a paste or use your spray bottle to wet it again.

If you’re ready to clean, you turn on your polisher and in a rhythmic pattern, you clean the shower glass.

Personal Protective Equipment

Brite and Clean Ultimate Hard Water Stain Remover Protective Gloves Get Rid of Hard Water StainsAll right. Now while we’re in the shower and we’re using this cleanser, it is non-toxic and it’s not going to cause us any harm. There are no harsh fumes.  So, we don’t need a face mask or protective eyewear.

But we are going to wear our work smart, not hard gloves. These are not our regular cleaning gloves. These are the gloves that we use when we use electronic tools.

This is going to give us a little bit more protection than just our nitrile gloves or our latex gloves. These are a synthetic fabric of polyester and dipped inside nitrile.

So that’s going to give me a good grasp when I go to hold the unit itself. It’s going to keep the unit from slipping in my hands.

All right, so these are our work smart, not hard tools.

Once Inside the Shower to Clean

Brite and Clean Ultimate Hard Water Stain Remover Orbital inside shower Get Rid of Hard Water StainsOnce you begin the project, you’ll want to apply enough pressure to get through the hard water stains. But you have to be careful not to add too much pressure because you don’t want to bust the shower glass.

I use one hand to support the glass while my other hand is using the orbital polisher.

Work in 2 x 2 feet sections until you’ve removed the hard water stains.

Stop often to re-wet your microfiber bonnet and apply new Ultimate Hard Water Stain Remover.

Spray the next section of the shower glass and repeat the process.

Let the orbital polisher do the heavy lifting for you. Your job is to just guide it and apply a bit of pressure.

Fiberglass & Cultured Marble Showers Are Okay Too

Before Brite & Clean Hard Water Stain Remover - Shower 1, Get Rid of Hard Water StainsThis shower is cultured marble for three sides of the shower. It has hard water build up on it as well. Repeat the process you used for the glass on the other three walls.

And now that it the job is complete, it looks brand new.

Make sure to take before and after pictures of your hard water stain removing jobs. The results are impressive.

Different Showers – Different Challenges

Before Brite & Clean Hard Water Stain Remover - Shower 2, Get Rid of Hard Water StainsHere’s a different home also with hard water stains.

The process is the same.

  1. Fill up the water bottle
  2. Wet the microfiber bonnet and cap the head of the orbital buffer.
  3. Put your gloves on and plug in your polisher.
  4. Once inside the shower add a few shakes of Ultimate Hard Water Stain Remover Cleanser to the microfiber head.
  5. Spray a bit of water on the head to create a paste.
  6. Turn on your Polisher and work in 2 x 2-foot sections around the shower glass.

Troubleshooting the Stain Removal Process

Brite and Clean first layer that's coming right off Get Rid of Hard Water StainThis is the first layer that’s coming right off. Next, we will go over it with the microfiber Brite Wipes to get the last of this off. But this is the first pass. If when you are doing the finishing wipe with the Brite Wipes and you still see etching – you may need an extra step.

Extra Step

Brite and Clean Microfiber Cloth Get Rid of Hard Water StainsUse a damp skinny white microfiber cloth and wrap it around three fingers. Apply more Ultimate Hard Water Stain Remover and with your fingers work your way through the buildup.

You may have to go in three to six-inch sections until you remove the hard water etching. When complete, wipe with the Brite Wipes microfiber cloths to finish.
