Angela Brown Vacuuming with a Dyson Vacuum

Dyson Animal Ball Vacuum Product Review

In this Dyson Animal Ball vacuum product review, we look at the reasons we love the DC41 Dyson. The Dyson Animal Ball vacuum product review and ratings from consumers are superb. J.D. Power lists Dyson in its top 3 vacuums year after year.

We love the Dyson Animal Ball vacuum for its performance, quality, research, and design. Not to mention its rigorous testing, power, suction and durable technology.

Angela Brown did this Dyson Animal Ball Vacuum product review because she owns one. She says it’s a “rugged vacuum” and Savvy Cleaner Approved. A bagless vacuum cleaner saves time and money for a homeowner and a professional house cleaner.

What is the best vacuum to buy? Oh, I love this question, and I get this question asked about 30 times a week, from both professionals and homeowners. So, we’re going to talk about vacuums today.

Hi there, I’m Angela Brown, and this is Ask a House Cleaner. This is a show where you get to ask a house cleaning question, and I get to help you find an answer. Now, today we’re doing a product review, back by popular demand. Now, I will clarify this by saying this is not a paid sponsorship. Dyson did not send me a shiny new vacuum and ask me to review it for you.

Dyson DC41 Animal Ball is My Personal Vacuum

Dyson DC41 Animal CompleteThis is my personal vacuum that is beat up. It’s been through the wringer. It’s been through the war. I’ve had it for four or five years. This model is the DC41, and it’s from the Animal Ball family line of vacuums that Dyson creates. The reason I’m going to share this vacuum with you is because it has been through the wringer. It’s been on professional jobs, and I use it in my personal home.

Professional House Cleaners Get to Use Lots of Vacuums

JD Power DysonNow, as a professional house cleaner of 25 years, I’ve been in all kinds of homes with all kinds of vacuums. And my preference is always using the customer’s vacuum. I don’t like transferring the germs and dust on vacuums from home to home.

And it’s hard to clean a vacuum between many homes on the same day. When you go home at night, you can clean it. And then your vacuum is clean again for the next day, but it’s hard to clean between jobs. So, I always recommend that you use the customer’s vacuum.

Okay, so I’ve used all kinds of vacuums, and there are some fantastic vacuums on that market that I like for a variety of different reasons. But when it came to choosing a vacuum for my own personal use, and for my home, I chose the Dyson DC41.

Dyson Animal Ball – Family of Vacuums

Dyson Animal Ball Vacuum Product Review Family of VacuumsNow, Dyson, in the Animal Ball vacuum family, there are lots of different vacuums. But it’s pretty much the papa bear, the mama bear, and the baby bear of the vacuums. They have big, medium size, and small, and this is the mama bear vacuum in the lineup. Now, the newer version of this is the Animal Ball 2.

Okay, so this vacuum has 180, one eight zero, patents on it, that is how impressive it is. Dyson has gone through all these hoops, and they have jumped through all kinds of amazing stuff to make sure that this vacuum is at the top of its game.

Dyson Animal Ball Has an Extra Long Cord

Dyson Animal Ball Vacuum Product Review Stairway AttachmentAll right, so the thing that I like about it, it’s got a 35-foot cord. This allows you to plug it in and stretch it all the way across the house. Now you can do your vacuuming without having to stop and keep re-plugging it in as you’re vacuuming.

Dyson Animal Ball Vacuum is Sealed

Dyson Animal Ball Vacuum Product Review, Angela Brown Loss of SuctionThis is a sealed vacuum so there’s no air and dust that’s circulating through the vacuum, that spits out in other directions. Now, I’ve had vacuums where it looks like it’s vacuuming, but it’s spitting stuff right out the back. This vacuum does not do that.

This vacuum grabs everything, and it cycles it, and it processes it through two HEPA filtration systems.

And I’m going to take this apart in just a minute, and I’m going to show you the HEPA filtration system, and I’m going to show you how that works.

Dyson Animal Ball Is Bagless

Dyson Animal Ball Vacuum Product Review, Angela Brown Emptying Vacuum CroppedAnother thing that I love about the vacuum is that it has no consumables, and so there are no replacement bags to buy. This is a canister vacuum. You push one button, this is how it comes off.

When you go to empty it, you push this one button, all the stuff comes out this little door, boom, and you empty it, that’s it. So, there are no bags to replace, which is awesome.

Dyson Animal Ball – Washable HEPA Filters

Dyson Animal Ball Vacuum Product Review, Angela Brown Cleaning Vacuum Filter2 CroppedAll right, another thing that I recommend is the washable filters. It’s got two HEPA filters, and they are washable, so you do not have to replace them. In the five years that I’ve owned this, and it’s pretty close to five years, I’ve replaced the filters exactly zero times. Yay! I win. And I’ve replaced the bags exactly zero times. There are no bags to replace.

Dyson Animal Ball Has an Unmatched Warranty

And it’s been in the shop exactly zero times. So, even though it has a five-year warranty, I’m telling you, this thing runs like its brand new, which is one of the reasons why I haven’t upgraded it. It works just fine.

Dyson Animal Ball Vacuum Ranges $300 – $400

Dyson Animal Ball Vacuum Product Review Average Price $300+Now, these are not cheap vacuums. You’re going to invest some money in the vacuum. It’s in the $300 to $400 range, but here’s the catch, for as much as I use a vacuum, I wanted something that was durable and rugged. My keyword being rugged.

Check out this video from Dyson on the rigorous testing process they put their vacuums through. I mean, they beat the crap out of these vacuums, and the vacuum just, like, keeps on going.

And if there’s any glitch at any point along the way, they revise it, and they reinvent it so that it doesn’t do that. I mean, it’s like I say, 180 patents, they’ve got this thing figured out.

Dyson Animal Ball Vacuum is Light Weight

Dyson Animal Ball Vacuum Product Review, Angela Brown Proper Way to Carry Vacuum (2)All right, so the next thing about the vacuum is that it’s lightweight, and that is important for me. Okay, this vacuum, all put together with filters and attachments it is 17 pounds. And so, that’s like carrying around a small toddler.

And so, if you are a professional house cleaner, carrying a vacuum back and forth will take its toll on your body.

Note: I prefer not to take my own vacuum to customers houses. But if you have customers on the side of 80 years old, you may need to bring your own vacuum. Many of them have 30-year-old clunky vacuums with suction that no longer works.

If I do use my own vacuum, I clean it out from top to bottom at the end of each cleaning.

Dyson Animal Ball Vacuum Small Enough to Fit in Any Size Car

Dyson Animal Ball Vacuum Product Review, Angela Brown Crevice Attachment in Car

All right, so the interesting thing about this vacuum is it’s lightweight, so if you’re going to put it inside your car, it’s easy to do. And if you’re going to carry it up a flight of stairs, it’s easy to do.

Reduced Strain from Movement of Vacuums

And then, if you’re going to be wheeling it all around the house, and pushing it back and forth, there’s no strain on your shoulders. Professional House Cleaners get lots of strain in their shoulders from the constant movement of vacuums.

So, having a lightweight, easy-to-maneuver vacuum is important.

Dyson is Known for the Snap

Fingers Snapping - Clip ArtAnother thing that I might mention as I put this back together is it’s not put back together until you hear it snap. Dyson is known for the snap, and what that means is any part of the vacuum could still be open unless you hear it snap. Once you hear it snap, then it’s airtight, and it’s sealed. So, listen, there you go. There’s the seal.

What to Do if You Lose Suction

Dyson Animal Ball Vacuum Product Review, Angela Brown Vacuum CroppedNow, while I’m here, I will mention, if for any reason, you should lose suction in the vacuum, it is probably user error. And what that means is there is a hole, or there is a leak somewhere. Something did not snap.

If you lose suction power, and you have been using the hose, make sure that this little door at the top is closed. Because if the door is open then air is escaping, and it’s not sealed, right? So, you want to make sure that’s snapped as well.

Okay, so everything snaps together, and once it’s snapped it’s sealed, and it’s ready to go again.

Dyson Animal Ball Vacuum with Vibrating Floor Brush

Dyson Animal Ball Vacuum Product Review, Angela Brown Vacuuming Rug CroppedNow here’s s a fun test. We put some dirt on the carpet. And as we get closer to the dirt, the dirt is vibrating on the carpet. Not because air is coming out of the vacuum, but because the beater bar is beating the floor.

It beats the floor with such force that it sucks everything close, and when it gets close it sucks it up. This is a “work smart not hard” way to vacuum.

No Crevice Tool Necessary for Room Edges

Dyson Animal Ball Vacuum Product Review, Angela Brown Pointing to Accordion EdgeWith other vacuums, you have to put the crevice tool on the hose and vacuum the room edges. This is where the carpet meets the wall.

But with the Dyson, the edge of the beater bar is so small that it goes right up against the wall. And as it beats the carpet it sucks all that in, and it sucks it up. So, it vacuums the floor and the room edges in one fell swoop.

Can you see how much time using the Dyson Animal Ball Saves me?

Dyson Animal Ball Vacuum Attachment Tools

All right, this is my set of attachment tools, and these three right here come with the unit itself when you buy it. These three pieces are extra, and the reason that I have these three pieces that are extra is that I bought this unit at Costco. And part of the deal that they had at Costco was that I was able to get these other three pieces besides to the pieces that it came with. But if you buy this at another store, or if you buy this online, you will get these three pieces right here.

Dyson Animal Ball Vacuum Product Review Active Base PlateLet me explain to you really quickly what they are. This particular one is great. it just slides down to the end and it clips in place. It’s super for baseboards, where you have the ridges of the baseboards. It’s also great for six-panel doors, where you have the raised part, and you have to dust that, and you can just vacuum it up as you go.

You can also use it as a crevice tool to get into the corners of your bathrooms, for example, and around the toilet, and behind the toilet. This is also a great way to do this, as it attaches to the hose. These are all hose attachments.

Stair Attachment for Dyson Animal Ball Vacuum

This one fits on the side of the vacuum, and it just fits inside and clips into place. And this is for stairs. Carpeted stairs, for example, have a little piece of wood that goes down the sides of the stairs that is hard to get. This is great if you put it on the end of the hose, and you can get the corners of the stairs with this. This also snaps in right here, to the vacuum, and this travels with the vacuum.

Dyson’s Turbine Tool is Great for Animal Hair

Dyson Animal Ball Vacuum Product Review, Angela Brown Turbine ToolAll right, so this part is called a turbine. I actually call it the fur catcher. The brush heads cycle in two separate directions, which instead of grabbing hair like the roller bar, will grab a lot of hair and it just rolls it into a spin.

This goes in two separate directions, and so it keeps hair, and fur, and stuff, from clomping up as it sucks it into the hose. It’s perfect to use on furniture, and upholstery, and drapes. You can use it on cloth shower curtains, and things that that hang, like tapestries. So, this part, by itself, is, like, $75, and it comes with the unit. So, right there, that’s worth a whole lot of money.

Dyson Animal Ball Vacuum Product Review, Angela Brown Placing Attachment on VacuumThe Crevice Tool is the FrenchFry & Cheeto Catcher

This I call the French fry and Cheeto catcher because it reaches down in your car between the car seats. With it you can pick up any French fries, and Cheetos and Cheerios you’ve dropped. Every car and SUV need one of these tools.

The Three Extra Attachments

Dyson Animal Ball Vacuum Product Review Under Sofa PlateIf you don’t buy the Costco version you can buy these online. The first is a flat head attachment that hooks on the hose. It slides underneath sofas and chairs.

Instead of moving furniture around, simply attach the flat head and zip under cabinets, dressers, and furniture.

And as you vacuum, it vacuums up all the dust, dog hair, pet hair, debris, cobwebs, you name it. So, this is a favorite piece of mine.

Soft Attachment Head with Felt – Great to Vacuum Walls

Dyson Animal Ball Vacuum Product Review, Angela Brown Dusting AttachmentThis next piece does wonders on walls with dust or cobwebs. You can use this because it’s just got a soft plate against the wall, and you can actually just vacuum your walls. So, that’s not what it’s designed to do, but that’s how I use it, and I love it. So, I do use all the tools, and I’ve gotten great use out of them.

Other Work Smart Not Hard Tools to Use with Dyson Animal Ball Vacuum

Now, these are not anything Dyson related, these are your working smart not hard tools. These are OXO Good Grips Deep Clean brushes that I use to clean out the bristles of the roller brush.

On the beater bar itself I use the little scissors so that I can clip along the hairs that have bunched up along the way. So, these go inside my cleaning caddy, and I always have these with me. Then I use the OXO brushes to brush out lint and debris stuck in the roller head.

Hide the Beater Brush with One Button

Dyson Animal Ball Vacuum Product Review, Angela Brown Beater Brush ButtonThere are two buttons here at the top of the vacuum handle. One is the off and on button. And the other one tucks the beater bar inside the shell so you can use the vacuum on hardwood floors.

Auto Sensors for Fast Vacuuming

The beater bar has an accordion like head. It allows vacuuming from the carpet to hardwood and back without any other actions. It’s great for vacuuming throw rugs and the area around them. As you vacuum it senses what type of flooring, you’re on and it makes the necessary adjustments.

Dyson Animal Ball Vacuum Savvy Cleaner Approved

Dyson Savvy Cleaner Seal of ApprovalAlrighty, and that’s a little bit about the Dyson, and now you can see why I’m so excited about this product. It’s a vacuum I use a lot. And it stands the test of time, and it passes the Angela Brown acid test. For this, I’m going to give this the Savvy Cleaner Seal of Approval.

All right, now I want to hear your Dyson stories. Do you have a Dyson? Have you ever thought about getting a Dyson? What kind of Dyson do you have?

Let’s start a conversation in the notes below. I want to hear how it works for you. What do you love about it? And if you have any questions, let’s have your questions as well, and we will get somebody at Dyson to answer them.

All right, that’s it for today. Until we meet again, leave the world a cleaner place than when you found it.

What do you use to scrub the gunk out of the bottom of your bathtub? That’s a great question and we’re going to talk about that today. Hi there. I’m Angela Brown. And this is Ask A House Cleaner. This is a show where you get to ask a house cleaning question and I get to help you find an answer. Now today, to answer that question, I’m going to share with you a product review on one of my favorite products.

Introducing the Scotch Brite Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge

Scotch Brite Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge Close Up of ScrubbieThis is the Scotch-Brite Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge. Try to say that fast three times. This is it. It’s two scrubbies built into one. On one side, we have a sponge. It’s a soft, porous sponge that’s made of wood fiber. So, it picks up and it holds water and the soap and the stuff that you’re using to clean.

The other side is a scrubby and it’s more abrasive. This is the side you will use to clean the gunk from the bottom of the bathtub.

So, two sponges built into one all for the same money. Woohoo!

Alright. So, the company that manufacturers the Scotch-Brite Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge is 3M. And 3M is a publicly traded company. They’re huge. And they produce a whole bunch of useful household things. Anything from adhesive removers, all the way down to Post-it Notes.

They create lots of useful things and this is one of them.

Alright, this is not sponsored, they don’t know that I’m doing this, they did not pay for this show. But, I’m such a huge fan of these, that I wanted to share with you how I use them.

Scotch Brite Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge Stocking Stuffers

The holidays are coming up and if you’re looking for stocking stuffers, these are great because everybody can use them. Now, every household needs a scrub sponge in every bathroom and you need one at the kitchen sink. So, you will use these for all sorts of things that I’m about to show you.

But they make awesome gifts. I’m telling ya. When people open up their gifts on Christmas day and they find non-scratch scrub sponges, they’re going to get so excited. Like, “Yay! Look at me. I get to clean now.”

Well, no, that’s maybe not how they will feel. But, once they start using them, then they will be joyous for the gift.

Scrub Sponges for Trick-or-Treaters? YES!

Scotch Brite Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge Unhappy Trick-or-TreaterNow, I do have a true confession. At Halloween, we made up some little gift bags and the trick-or-treaters came. We gave them gift bags and they had the Scotch-Brite Non-Scratch Scrub Sponges in them. And the kids hated it, I’m told. But their parents loved it. So, yay. Weird gift, but everyone wins, okay?

Scotch Brite Non-Scratch Scrub Sponges for DishesScotch Brite Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge Washing Dishes

Now, I’m going to show you how to use them and just get creative. Because of the two sides, they are soft enough that you can use them on your finest dishware. And they are strong enough that you can use them on your icky pots and pans.

So, they have multi-uses limited only by your imagination.

How to Sterilize Non-Scratch Scrub Sponges

Scotch Brite Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge Boiling SpongesLet’s talk about sterilization. Because the non-scratch scrub sponges are porous, they hold a lot of stuff. We talked about it holding soap and water. It also holds bacteria.

And so, sponges are a little bit “eww”. Like, if you don’t clean them regularly, they can get nasty.

And so, some people just refuse to use them because they don’t know that you can sterilize them. And after using them you should leave them where they can air dry. So, I want to let you know you can sterilize them.

Don’t Microwave the Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge

Scotch Brite Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge Sterilizing Sponges in Dishwasher

It’s scientifically proven that you can kill bacteria in sponges by microwaving them while soaking wet for 2 min. The ones you can microwave are regular sponges.

Now, this one, because it has this scrubby on the side, we don’t want to microwave it. There are sponges you can microwave, but this is not one of them. You do not want to put this in the microwave. But you can put it on the top shelf of your dishwasher. And you run it through the hottest cycle on the longest cycle and it will sterilize these.

Also, you can put them in boiling water and it will boil out all the impurities. So, just a couple of ways to keep your Non-Scratch Scrub Sponges sanitary.

Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge Reusable / Disposable

Scotch Brite Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge with furbeesIf you have a Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge that starts to fall apart, is too nasty to clean, or has furbees on it, it’s time to throw it away. And I know that it’s easy to hold on to these and say, “Oh, look. There’s still some life left in it.” When they get nasty and they start withering up and start dying, that’s the time to throw them away.

While you will get weeks of use from your sponges, they are disposable.

You Can Buy Non-Scratch Scrub Sponges in Bulk

Average Price 1-5Scotch Brite knows you’ll use lots of their sponges and they package them at a discount in bulk. Buy a bunch now and never run out. And if you clean houses for a living, you can pass the cost of your cleaning supplies onto your customer.

Now, one note on house cleaning businesses. One per house. Don’t take these from house to house. Only use one per house. Then, when you get home and you do your inventory of the day, that’s when you run them through the dishwasher cycle. And then, you have sanitary sponges for the next house. This will prevent spreading germs from one house to another house.

Use Non-Scratch Scrub Sponges on Patio Furniture

Scotch Brite Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge Cleaning Plastic Patio FurnitureAlright. Let’s go see how they work. Shall we?

Scotch Brite Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge Cleaning Wrought Iron Patio FurnitureLet’s use hot water and some dish soap and the scrubby side of the Scrub Sponge. Together you can turn any plastic patio furniture and take it from dirty to like new.

You can use the same dish soap and hot water and scrub sponge on wrought iron patio furniture to remove dust, debris, film, and mold.

Take care to clean the arms, and legs of the chairs so the entire patio pieces get a facelift.

Use Non-Scratch Scrub Sponges on Granite Countertops

Scotch Brite Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge Wiping Crumbs off Counter TopAnother use for the Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge is cleaning a granite countertop. You’ll want to prep the countertop by pulling all the crumbs off first. And for this, we use a flexible cutting board tucked just under the edge of the countertop.

Using a sweeping motion with the sponge side of the sponge we’ll collect the crumbs.

Then, once we’re done with the crumbs, we dump them in the trash and now we’re ready to wipe the countertop down.

Scotch Brite Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge Wiping down Granite CountertopGoing in a Z pattern, which is a speed-cleaning technique, we’ll use our left hand to guide where we’ve been and will only go over every area once.

This keeps us from duplicating our work.

Take care not to clean in a circular motion or you’ll double back over an area you’ve already cleaned.

Warning: Don’t Use The Scrub Sponge to Wipe Up Dairy

Scotch Brite Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge Don't clean up meat cuttingNow, one note about sponges, while we’re talking about using a sponge to wipe down and countertop. This is true for any sponge on any countertop. You do not ever want to use a sponge to clean a countertop where are have just been cutting raw meat.

This also goes for wiping down a cutting board where are you been cutting raw meat.

Scotch Brite Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge Don't use for egg cleanupThis also applies to egg whites that dribbled on the counter when you were cracking eggs.

Traces of dairy products lingering in your sponge can create bacteria that turn to Salmonella or E. Coli.

Use instead a paper towel to clean up after meat cutting or eggs. Then toss the paper towel. This way you won’t spread raw meat or egg germs around your kitchen.

Prevent cross-contamination whenever possible.

Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge for Bath Tubs

Scotch Brite Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge Pin up Shower CurtainsNow, I promised to show you how to clean the gunk out of the bottom of a bathtub. But first we’re going to make sure that the shower curtain is out of the way. Then we’ll move shampoos, soaps and other bath stuff from the tub.

Next, we’ll wet down the tub with a shower head on a hose. Then we’ll shake a bit of powdered cleanser in the bottom of the tub.

Scotch Brite Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge Scouring a tubUsing the scrubby side of the Scrub Sponge we’ll clean the floor first. Then we’ll leave the cleanser on the floor of the tub allowing dwell time to work it’s magic while we scrub the shower walls.

Once we’re done scrubbing the walls, we’ll rinse the tub. And if you don’t have a shower head on a hose you can use a large cup to pour water down the walls. Make sure you use water in a way that it guides the cleanser and grime towards and down the drain.

Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge for Sinks & Vanities

Scotch Brite Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge Scouring a sinkNow, we’re going to repeat the process with the sink.

Wet the basin of the sink, shake some powder cleanser and use the webbing part of the sponge to scrub out the sink.

Turning the sponge over, use the sponge side to wipe down the granite vanity top of the sink. Use care when cleaning faucets and the backsplash.

After cleaning the sink and vanity, wipe down with your cotton cloth to finish.

Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge for Finger Prints

Scotch Brite Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge Wiping Fingerprints off DoorsAnother use for the sponge is to clean the fingerprints off of a door.  You can do this on a maintenance clean or an Airbnb clean.

Spray the door with an all-purpose cleaner wipe the fingerprints with the sponge side of your Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge.

You can do this daily or whenever you see fingerprints appearing.

Non-Scratch Scrub Sponges Savvy Cleaner Approved

Scotch Brite Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge Savvy Cleaner ApprovedCan you see why I’m such a fan of the Scotch Brite Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge?

I use it for everything. It’s become one of my favorite work smart, not hard tools.  I’m going to give this the Savvy Cleaner Seal of Approval.

Now, I want to hear your experience. Do you use them? Do you use them on everything I showed you? Or, do you use them on something else? I want to know. And if you don’t use these, what do you use instead? I want to hear.

Alright, let’s start a conversation in the notes below and if you found this helpful, please pass it on to a friend.
