How Do You Get Rid of the Musty Moldy Smells?
A customer wrote in and said, “Listen, I’ve got a bunch of molds and musty smells and odors and stuff in my closet.” The closet is right off the side of the bathroom. There’s not enough ventilation in the bathroom to have the air dissipate. So, is it’s starting to stick on the walls, clothes, and shoes. Things are starting to smell bad and maybe create a little bit of mold.
In a perfect world, you would have proper ventilation. It’s not a perfect world. There are lots of people with basements that smell musty or a pantry or closet that doesn’t smell right. The problem is moisture coming from the air, and it’s worse when there’s a lot of humidity. So, if you open the door, humidity comes in and it goes places it shouldn’t go.
What Do You Do?
Well, there are a couple of options. You can get a dehumidifier to remove the humidity from the air, or you can use a product like DampRid. DampRid is a product designed to pull moisture from the air and trap it, so it doesn’t stay and make that smell.
The cool thing is it removes the odors and mustiness, as well as the moisture. DampRid is a proprietary product designed to be septic safe. That’s awesome because you can just pour the extra water it sucked up down the toilet.
DampRid is Designed for Closets
It comes in a pouch that looks a whole lot like a coat hanger. In the back, there are little granules and the granules are white. They look like little flecks of paint. They actually grab the moisture and become hard like a rock. And when they become hard, they start to drip and all the water drips in the bottom of the bag.
There’s something about the way the front of the bag is made that lets the moisture in. So, you’re going to hang this up inside your closet according to the instructions. When it’s filled with water, then you know it’s done its job. Then, you remove it from your closet and replace it.
You’ve got to replace the bag every 45 to 60 days. If there’s a lot of moisture in the air, maybe more often than that.
DampRid Doesn’t Just Work in Closets
Even though it’s designed for closets, you can hang them other places, too. If you have a boat or an RV or even in a school locker room with stinky stuff and there’s moisture. It’s on fabric and clothes, so this is perfect to hang up in the locker as well. It’s awesome.
The next product I want to talk to you about is also DampRid, but this is in a granular form. And I should let you know that there is an entire line of DampRid products. Do you know what’s really cool? The company is employee-owned and it’s been around for almost seven decades. And they’ve got this down to a science. So, this is super exciting.
Use DampRid All Over the House
There is also one made for your bathroom, laundry room, basement, or any of the closets with a musty odor. It comes with a lid that you open completely so it can attract the moisture from the air. The little granules that were in the bag are in a little bag of their own here. And this has the little white flakes in them, but it also has yellow air freshener beads. So, it freshens the air as well.
It traps all that inside this little colander looking thing. Once it’s in here and the water has grabbed a hold inside, the little flakes become hard like a rock. Then, water starts to drip out underneath into a little bucket.
It’s an Amazing System
So, it’s this amazing, simple system that is refillable so you’re not wasting lots of plastic. When it’s full, it’s mostly empty with only the little yellow beads left. Those go right into the trash. And this part just gets dumped in the toilet, which is all the brine-like saltwater that it has now become. It’s going to be at the bottom here, so you just dump that in the toilet, flush it, and you start over again.
It’s an efficient, simple system, and it’s sold at stores everywhere. You can find it at Target and Walmart and places like Ace Hardware and Home Depot.
